Common Elderberry_001_JFF9136

Beautiful to look at and tasty to eat - just make sure you cook them first! Common Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis; aka S. nigra ssp. canadensis) is indeed common and a large native shrub found across much of the eastern U.S. Its large, flat-topped flower clusters produce prolific amounts of berries that are consumed by over 40 species of birds and mammals in the eastern U.S.

Location: Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park, Prince William County, VA
