Dolly Sods Heath Barren Microcosm

Dolly Sods Heath Barren Microcosm

Roll out the red carpet for this intimate stroll into life in the Dolly Sods Heath Barren. Here we have some of the quintessential plants of the Heath Barrens and Sphagnum Glades: Teaberry (Gaultheria procumbens), a cone from Red Spruce (Picea rubens), a carpet of this strikingly red Sphagnum moss, and that little, adorable killer the carnivorous Sundew plant (Drosera rotundifolia).

The "dew" of the sundew plant is a sweet allurement produced by the tentacle-like glands, but it also is sticky making it hard for small insects to escape. Touch triggers the tentacles to enfold the captured insect and cover it with the sticky substance smothering it and introducing enzymes that begin to decompose the victims body.

Well, even the plant world has a dark side!
