The more time I spend around Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum) the more I like it. This native shrub has A LOT going for it, and a lot to give. Here we see just how brilliant its fall color can be. Typically it will provide bright reds and oranges as it transitions into dormancy.

The leafy wing along the petiole of the leaf is how it gets its name. Another common name is "Shining Sumac". I prefer Winged Sumac, since that name aids in telling this species from its close cousin, Smooth Sumac.
