Pied-bills are one of the smallest of the grebes. They are almost never seen on land or even on a perch out of the water.

After several attempts photographing them over the years, I was coming to the conclusion that they were too shy and might never come close enough for a good shot. Until I met this little fella who thought I was quite the curiosity - I had to chuckle and ask him to back up a little so his whole body would fit in the frame. Thankfully he agreed.
