Stopover habitat is vital to migrating birds, especially those traveling great distances.

This Ruddy Turnstone is on his spring migration. He probably has another 2400 miles to go before he arrives at his breeding grounds in the far reaches of the Arctic.

Here he is searching for insects and small crustaceans late in the day on a gentle beach in the Mid-Atlantic. If he is well fed and the weather is right, he will probably take off about an hour after sundown on the next leg of his migration.
