Teetering down for a landing in the settling basin at Gilbert Water Ranch, everything about the stilts seems pointed, from the short "Kip, kip" calls, to the tips of their wings, and their needle-like bills. Long, thinner than thin legs help these waders navigate shallow pools where they feed on small crustaceans and insects by picking them from the water surface with sharp jabbing motions.
