This image shows a Sanderling that is well along in its transition from its winter plumage (mostly gray) to its breeding plumage of rich reddish browns. It looks well fed and ready to move on.

I photographed it on important wintering and stopover habitat in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge during its long migration to its breeding grounds in the far reaches of the Northern Arctic.
