Being an Easterner I don't have much familiarity with the succulents of the southwestern U.S. The large leaves of this Agave unfold so much more slowly than the leaves on our trees. And the spines, looking something like shark's teeth and being harder than the leaf blade, leave their impressions in the developing surface of the next leaf to unfold.
