Bald Eagle, 2nd Year JF01932

Bald Eagle, 2nd Year JF01932

It can be a challenge to identify the age of immature bald eagles as they make their 5 year journey to adulthood. Each year presents a different mosaic of brown and white feathers and bill color. But the second year of maturing provides a very helpful ID feature that distinguishes it from all the other immature years.

Can you see it in this image?

2nd year bald eagles have uneven lengths to their secondary wing feathers. Secondaries are the feathers that run along the back of the wing. Note how this individual has some longer secondaries extending beyond the others. Letting us know he or she is in his or her second year.
