Sanderlings winter along the coastal U.S. and other coastal areas all the way down to South America. But they breed in the coastal tundra of far northern Canada. So this little bird, feeding in spring along the Atlantic shore in Virginia has a long, long way to go.

Most likely it will following the Atlantic coast all the way around through New England and Canada to its breeding grounds. All the way relying upon small crustaceans, crab eggs and a variety of invertebrates it finds on and in the sand of receding waves.
