Hummingbird_Clearwing_16x20_JF95358

The Hummingbird Clearwing Moth may fool you the first time you encounter it. Its size, shape and movements are so similar to a hummingbird that it may take more than one look to be sure which you are seeing.

And like hummingbirds it frequents plants with deep tube-like flowers where the nectar is located at the base of the tube, requiring a long proboscis to reach it. In this image the plant is Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), a plant of sunny meadows. It also does well in a sunny garden and will attract both the hummingbird clearwing and actual hummingbirds.
