Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, kinda trips off the tongue don't you think?) is also known as "Kinnikinnick", an evergreen shrub that trails along the ground for some distance climbing over rocks and logs.
The small red berries stand out among the green leaves like ornaments on a Christmas tree. Its natural range is expansive, native mostly to the more northerly states and Canada, it is also found at higher elevations in some mid-latitude states, including a couple mountain regions of Virginia. This specimen was photographed in Glacier National Park, Montana.
