That this little bird is a juvenile, recently fledge from its nest, is evident by the white "pin feathers" growing on the top of his head and a few downy feathers still poking out here and there.

He also lacked the self assurance of most other birds patrolling this shoreline, seeming unsure of where to find his prey.
