Great Horned Owlet JF08012

Great Horned Owlet JF08012

While out in the Broad Run floodplain in my suburban neighborhood to photograph the lovely Virginia Bluebells, I thought I'd look for bluebells growing against the back drop of a fallen log. Imagine my surprise when I came across this young owlet among the bluebells.

Great Horned Owlets are known to leave their nests well before they can fly. They may wander about the nest tree, or make their way down to the ground and back up again for greater safety at night.

I imagine getting down could be quite easy if he lets gravity do most of the work. But how does a flightless owlet get back up a tree? It must be quite a sight and quite a feat.

I think this is the only bird I have photographed with my 105mm macro lens!
